Ness City Public Library is seeking applicants for the Assistant Librarian position. The ideal candidate is energetic, an effective communicator, organized, and has a passion for serving all ages in our community. The assistant librarian provides direct service support through reader’s advisory, reference services, and technology assistance and ensures a welcoming customer service-focused environment for all patrons. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A combination of two years of experience working with the public in a professional capacity and/or post-secondary education is preferred.

As the Assistant Librarian some of the things you will do are:

Customer Engagement

  • Deliver high quality customer service by assisting customers with library materials, digital resources, technology equipment, information needs, or other services. Engage with customers in person, by phone, email, text message, or chat services. Promote the use of services, materials, and programs to customers.
  • Help patrons locate and check out materials, register for services, and troubleshoot issues related to services, materials, and technology use.
  • Maintain collections and library spaces for ease of use, attractiveness, cleanliness, and general upkeep. The assistant librarian is the lead custodian.
  • Facilitate all aspects of Interlibrary Loans.

Program Development

  • Research, prepare, present, facilitate, and evaluate learning opportunities for the public based upon community needs and interests individually or as part of a team.
  • Research, prepare, write, and/or record content for publicity, displays, social media platforms, and website.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of children’s and adult literature, authors, and pop culture.
  • Knowledge of library tools such as ILS and learning resources such as databases, print and online resources. Ability to sort and shelve books according to library standards is a requirement.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and to work cooperatively with customers, volunteers, community partners, and supervisor.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours, arriving promptly, and maintaining reliable attendance is a must.
  • Computer skills and ability to use technology necessary for the position and learn new technology as it is needed.
  • Ability to travel safely to outreach sites within the community.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, as well as stand for extended periods.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

A pre and/or post-employment drug screen, criminal history record check and physical capacity testing may be required as a condition of employment.

SCHEDULE: Full-time 40 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours are required.  

PAY & BENEFITS: Hourly rate will be dependent on experience and qualifications. We offer an excellent benefits package including health insurance and a retirement plan (KPERS).
